breaking news:new york key player is back….
This season, the New York Giants have struggled in the passing game.
Because of inconsistency from Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, and undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito, the team ranks 32nd in passing yards through Week 14.
Some of this is due to offensive injuries and a lack of a true No. 1 pass-catcher who isn’t running back Saquon Barkley.
However, with less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Giants – and DeVito – could see the return of another offensive weapon.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, New York has opened up a 21-day practice window for tight end Darren Waller, who has been on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
This is significant for two reasons: the Giants are still technically in the playoff race, and Waller would immediately open up more opportunities for DeVito in the passing game.
Waller, for whom the Giants traded a third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, had 36 receptions for 384 yards and one touchdown through the first eight games of the season, ranking seventh among tight ends.
Despite missing the previous six games, his receptions and receiving yards are still second on the team.
Meanwhile, the Giants averaged 155.1 passing yards per game with Waller from Weeks 1 to 8, and 147.2 yards per game without him from Weeks 9 to 14.
While this isn’t a huge difference, excluding the two games in which the Giants passed for less than 64 yards (in Weeks 1 and 8), the pre-Waller average rises to 197.8 yards per game.
Waller’s return will be critical if the Giants are to make a serious playoff push.
