Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, has maintained that the team’s issues, both on and off the field, are his and his players’ fault.
Amorim also maintained that the Red Devils’ current situation is the result of the team’s poor performance over the previous few years, and that significant layoffs are once more being considered in order to free up funds for moves.
According to a story published by The People’s Person, Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to fire up to 200 additional employees in order to make up for losses of £300 million over the previous three years.
Amorim acknowledged to the media prior to United’s match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday that they have an obligation to produce performances and outcomes for those whose jobs are on the line.
“I believe it’s crucial for us—both as first-team players and coaches—not to overlook this situation. People are losing their jobs, and we have to recognize that. The main issue is our football—we’ve spent heavily, but we’re not getting results. Missing out on the Champions League means our revenue isn’t the same.
In the past, significant investments were made, but now we must be more cautious with our finances. We can’t rebuild the squad exactly as we’d like. When job losses occur, it naturally creates uncertainty and affects the overall atmosphere.
We can’t ignore this reality. We acknowledge the problem, and ultimately, the responsibility falls on the first-team—we need to make a change.”
“We should win against Tottenham as the first step. That is a modest step in an attempt to assist these individuals and avoid raising ticket costs. That is our responsibility.
There has been some pressure on Amorim to modify his system in order to make room for the players he currently possesses.
Despite the fact that his present strategy isn’t working, the 40-year-old reaffirmed that he will not alter it under any circumstances, putting him in danger of being fired.
“I agree to that. As a coach, you have to make that decision, but I genuinely believe in my methods.
“I am aware that you are always at risk in a club like this, under this type of pressure. I understand it, but it doesn’t really worry me. The hardest part of my job is losing games, not getting fired. All I want is to win games.
“Yes, it can be,” Amorim said when asked if upholding his values in the face of subpar outcomes may be a weakness rather than a strength. It might be a weakness at the time, in my opinion, but you have to stick with what you believe after all.
“I think there’s a lot of focus on the system, but the way we intend to play within it is quite different from what we’re currently executing. We’re working to improve, so to directly answer your question—yes, at times it’s a strength, and at other times it’s a weakness. I believe everyone understands that.
You start with a specific idea, but adjustments can be made within the same system to accommodate different styles of play. Simply changing the profile of two players can alter how the entire team performs, which, in my view, is more significant than the formation itself.
Ultimately, my main priority is winning matches—that’s my sole focus, whether people believe it or not.
In last Sunday’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Leicester City, Amorim opted to use Patrick Dorgu as a right-wing-back rather than on his usual left side. Explaining this decision, he said:
‘Dorgu played that role at Lecce, and at times, having a left-footed player on the right side can be beneficial, particularly against teams that employ one-on-one or man-marking tactics.
I’ve experienced playing against formations like 4-3-3 or 5-4-1, so I understand the types of qualities required. However, we also need time to refine our approach. If my tactical idea isn’t fully clicking yet, I need to find the right connections.’
Amorim emphasized that his frequent tactical adjustments are solely aimed at securing victories. ‘I’m trying everything possible to win games—that’s why I make so many changes… I just want to win.’
Kickoff for Tottenham vs. United is scheduled for 16:30 GMT.”
