Early in training camp, Stefon Diggs instilled a “competitive spirit” in the Texans receivers.
Houston — On Saturday, the eighth day of the Houston Texans training camp, Stefon Diggs and rookie Kamari Lassiter squared up for a one-on-one drill in the pouring rain.
Lassiter followed closely after Diggs as he made his way along the sidelines. They were fighting it out as C.J. Stroud unleashed the deep pass. To the applause of the Texans supporters there, Diggs successfully pulled in the over-the-shoulder catch while Lassiter’s left hand attempted to break it up.
The Pro Bowl receiver gave a brief celebratory pose in front of the bleachers before giving a few supporters high fives.
Early in camp, Texans second-year coach DeMeco Ryans has observed Diggs’ fierce competitive spirit spreading to all of the other wideouts.
Ryans remarked, “I really love just the competitive spirit of all those guys.” Witnessing men rise up and various men make plays every single day. And I believe that everyone is affected by Stefon’s approach to work, which sets the example for everyone else. He arrives with a fierce sense of competition.
The Texans tight end Dalton Schultz, who committed to a three-year, $36 million contract to remain in Houston throughout the offseason, has observed Diggs’ outspoken nature, his enthusiasm, and his unwavering competition.
When he gets to Houston, Diggs is only five yards away from racking up 10,000 career yards and is aiming for his seventh straight 1,000-yard season. He totaled 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns with the Bills in the previous campaign.
Diggs advised leaders to “always try to bring as many people with you as possible, no matter how much success you have.” And you are not going to stop shining your light at all, especially when it comes to these—they are truly exceptional. One of my big goals is to just struggle and compete at a high level out here.
John Metchie III appears to have absorbed the competitive spirit of the receiver room as he has already made several plays that would make a highlight reel during camp.
Despite overcoming an ACL injury in college and a leukemia diagnosis in his first two NFL seasons, the third-year wide is off to a great start as he competes for a receiver job.
