Postecoglou Dismisses Sympathy Claims as Spurs Overcome Injury-Hit Man Utd
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou showed little sympathy for Manchester United’s injury struggles after his side secured a 1-0 victory on Sunday.
United traveled to North London with a depleted squad, missing key players such as Amad—who was ruled out for the season—along with Kobbie Mainoo and others. As a result, their bench was largely made up of academy prospects.
However, Postecoglou, who has dealt with his own injury crisis this season—particularly in defense—had no patience for complaints about squad depth.
“If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers, so that hasn’t happened,” he quipped. “I saw Ruben [Amorim] with players out of position and kids on the bench. Well, welcome to my world. But that’s for one game. Now try doing that for two months.”
Despite their absences, United put in a solid performance, but James Maddison’s first-half strike proved to be the difference as Spurs completed a league double over their rivals. The win lifted Tottenham to 12th, one point ahead of Amorim’s struggling United side.
Amorim, who inherited Erik ten Hag’s squad, has remained firm in his tactical philosophy despite a lack of suitable players for his system. However, he admitted that injuries have made an already difficult situation even tougher.
“You know the situation—we can’t bring in players without selling first,” Amorim explained. “We tried, but it wasn’t possible. Now, we have young kids, and we have to work with them. We weren’t expecting so many injuries in one week, but these things happen. We just have to focus on the next game.”
