Charlie Woods knew he would have to work hard to advance in the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur.
The 15-year-old needed birdies to break the projected cut of 4-over after shooting an opening round 12-over 82.
Only the top 64 players moved on to the match play round on Wednesday.
This Saturday is the 36-hole championship match.
In the second round, Charlie was backed by his father Tiger, who also drew a gallery, and he gave it his all.
Charlie shot a 1-under in a qualifying last month to earn a berth in the 264-player field.
On Oakland Hills’ North Course, he had a strong start to his second round.
Charlie was one over after four holes when play was suspended for nearly an hour due to a storm.
After two greenside pitches on the par-4 18th hole caused him to make triple bogey, he proceeded to play the final five holes on the front nine in 8-over when play resumed.
At last, his fifth attempt held the green.
Charlie played six holes in one under on the back nine.
After bogeys at the 7th and 9th, he signed a card for 10-over 80 in the end.
After 36 holes, he was at 22 over.
Tiger was “mostly expressionless whether his son hit an excellent or poor shot,” according to ESPN.
Charlie drew enormous attendance, which was unexpected given that the competition normally draws spectators toward the conclusion.
Charlie was followed by hundreds of people, including police officers, on the fairway.
Charlie has experienced some terrible behavior from onlookers during previous competitions.
There have been reports that some spectators disregarded tournament officials’ instructions to allow him more room on the fairways during his attempt to qualify for his first PGA Tour event earlier this year.
A woman disclosed that she had taken her granddaughter out of school to have a meeting with the golfer.
Someone else insisted that he autograph a copy of his father’s book.
Charlie’s sophomore year of high school in Florida is about to start.
His father is the only player to have won the U.S. Junior Amateur three times in a row, having qualified for it at the age of 14.
Tiger Woods surprises golfers
Tiger Woods hurriedly boarded his private plane to return to the United States to witness his kid after missing the cut at the 2024 Open at Royal Troon.
He went to play his practice round with his son.
Additionally, he was seen for the first time without a protective sleeve covering his right leg.
In February 2021, Tiger got into a near-fatal vehicle accident.
His recovery is all the more amazing considering the horrific scar.
Tiger Woods downplays rumors of his retirement
In a major competition last week near the coast of Scotland, Tiger faltered once more.
To be fair, he played in the early-late wave at Royal Troon, so he had to put up with less than ideal conditions, but over two rounds, he posted a 14-over 156 (79-77).
Six-over was the cut.
He vowed that it was not his final Open, despite the disappointment.
In a year, he intends to return to the major at Royal Portrush.
He won’t, however, be competing in a professional golf event anytime soon.
Tiger said that the PNC Championship, a father-son competition, will be his next start in December.
He refers to the annual competition he plays with Charlie as his “fifth major.”
Tiger declared that he would participate in the Hero World Challenge.
He declared that he will be practicing and working out harder than ever for the upcoming several months.
