After making his Manchester United debut in Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Chido Obi has spoken out. After making a high-profile summer transfer from Arsenal to join Ruben Amorim’s senior squad for the first team, the 17-year-old striker made his way back to north London.
Following a week filled with injuries and illnesses, Amorim benched Victor Lindelof and eight uncapped youths at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Due to damage to his ankle ligament, Amad will miss the remainder of the season, and Kobbie Mainoo will miss weeks of action because of a muscle issue.
Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro were injured, and Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer were also sidelined because of their own injury problems.
After James Maddison’s first-half goal, United sought an equalizer, but Amorim was hesitant to use his young bench.
Additionally, the United head coach was heavily criticized for introducing Obi just after the first of three minutes of stoppage time had passed.
Prior to the final whistle, the Danish youth international did not make contact with the ball. In his post-match response, he did, however, thank United and Amorim.
“I’m disappointed in the outcome. Personally, I want to thank the club and the gaffer for helping me and my family realize a dream,” Obi posted on Instagram.
Given his impressive youth football exploits, United’s success in bringing Obi from Arsenal to Old Trafford last year was regarded as a major triumph.
With 41 goals, the towering striker holds the record for most goals scored in the U18 Premier League, and he has maintained his impressive play in Manchester.
Obi has earned a few appearances for the Under-21s and scored 12 goals in nine U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup games this season.
Amorim acknowledged that Rasmus Hojlund was his sole natural striker, implying that the wonderkid can anticipate playing more in the upcoming months.
After working full-time in the city, Amorim clarified, “I don’t think Josh [Zirkzee] is a clear nine.”
