Devers’ double earns Red Sox triumph in extras

BOSTON — For the Red Sox, rebounding back from their bad start coming out of the All-Star break has to start somewhere.

Why not a walk-off triumph to cap a tense Wednesday of baseball at Fenway Park in a rubber match against a team they are vying with for position in the American League Wild Card race?

Rafael Devers delivered the clinching blow against Mariners lefty Jhonathan Diaz, a leadoff double off the Green Monster in left-center to send automatic runner Tyler O’Neill from second to give the Red Sox a 3-2 win in 10 innings.

Devers earned Boston their first winning series in four tries since the All-Star break.

Earlier, there was drama with Kenley Jansen, as the closer shockingly came in from the bullpen before the bottom of the eighth was done.

He came out for the top of the ninth and, after getting the first two outs of the inning, appeared to be fighting with a back issue as manager Alex Cora and a member of the training staff came out for a visit.

Jansen continued in the game and Dom Smith fielded a grounder and hauled to first, diving on the bag to get the out against Cal Raleigh.
