The ideal Davis Cup format, in Novak Djokovic’s opinion, would be “something in between the old and the new format.” The new Davis Cup format debuted in 2019. The ITF claimed that something needed to change when they first announced their plans to alter the format, citing the declining popularity of the competition.

However, some individuals harshly criticized the new change, so their plan was not well received. The Davis Cup format was announced to have changed by the ITF five years ago, but some people still feel strongly about the changes. The elimination of home-and-away ties—aside from the qualifiers—is the main source of dissatisfaction with the new format.

This week, Djokovic arrived in Malaga for the Davis Cup Finals 8, and he shared his thoughts.

Personally, I believe that a hybrid format that combines elements of the old and new would work best, as I do not believe that this would work best for all of the World Group’s member countries. It is not good that we haven’t performed in Serbia for a long time because it denies the Serbian people, especially the younger ones, the chance to see us perform.
