Bayern Munich’s usually potent attack struggled to find its rhythm in a goalless Champions League draw against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday at Allianz Arena.
While coach Thomas Tuchel has been associated with offensive prowess, the blame for the underwhelming performance may not be entirely on his shoulders this time.
The starting eleven was altered, with Raphael Guerreiro, Mathys Tel, and Thomas Muller being named. Despite not being regular starters this season, the trio had high expectations, especially from Tuchel, who gave them the opportunity.
Tuchel expressed his disappointment with the performance in a post-match interview, saying, “It was difficult.” It’s okay, late November evenings aren’t always easy.
I actually expected us to play with more freedom because we were already first and had nothing to lose. However, it was the other way around. We didn’t work hard enough.”
Tuchel’s disappointment stems from his expectation of a more daring attacking display, given that Bayern had already qualified for the knockout stages. Expecting players with limited game time this season to seamlessly gel and produce a dynamic attacking display proved difficult.
While the quality of Muller, Guerreiro, and Tel is undeniable, a lack of playing time has become an unexpected concern for a team with a relatively thin squad like Bayern.
Despite the offensive struggles, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was crucial to the team’s success.Frappart’s officiating was criticized after she denied Bayern three penalties, including two incidents involving pushes on Muller and a contentious handball in the area by a Copenhagen player. Tuchel, on the other hand, chose not to address the referee controversy, stating, “It’s better not to say anything.” It only gets expensive as a coach when you bring up the referee. You must inquire about the ref from the referee’s observed.
Despite Neuer’s outstanding performance, Bayern Munich’s typically potent attack faltered in a surprising draw, leaving Tuchel frustrated. The unanticipated stumbling block calls into question squad depth and the integration of players with limited game time.
