On Wednesday, New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito spoke with reporters about how Week 1 starter Daniel Jones has continued to serve as a mentor despite DeVito becoming an undrafted fan favorite.

“When he’s around, when he’s done doing his rehab, and he’s either in here or in the quarterback room, I’m always picking his brain, just having a conversation,” DeVito said of Jones, according to the Giants’ website.

When Jones suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5, primary backup Tyrod Taylor was already out with an injury. DeVito lost his first NFL start in Jones’ absence, but has since led the Giants to three straight victories. Some locals appear to have replaced Jones in their hearts with the New Jersey native.

According to Audacy’s Ryan Chichester, WFAN radio host Evan Roberts said on Tuesday that Jones is “very worried” about DeVito’s rise as the 26-year-old recovers from a serious setback. DeVito stated on Wednesday that this is not the case.

Jones praised DeVito’s confidence and work ethic prior to knee surgery, traits that have helped the 25-year-old achieve success as a QB1 in the country’s largest sports market after beginning his debut pro season as a practice-squad option. DeVito mentioned some of the advice he’s gotten from Jones in the last month.

Jones is well aware of the ups and downs that come with being a pro athlete in the New York market, as home fans chanted his name less than a year ago after he assisted the Giants in clinching a playoff berth. Much may be said about DeVito possibly replacing Jones on a full-time basis early next year, but it appears that the 2019 first-round draft pick is currently doing everything he can to help the rookie keep the 5-8 Giants in the playoff hunt ahead of this Sunday’s game against the 6-7 New Orleans Saints.
