former first-round NBA draft pick and star collegiate basketball player at Michigan State, was shot and killed early Monday in Orlando, Florida, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Payne was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks at No. 15 overall in 2014 and played for the Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic during a five-year NBA career.Former NBA player Adreian Payne shot to death in Orlando - ABC News

According to the sheriff’s office, the former player was shot at a home in Orlando around 1:30 a.m. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. Payne was 31 years old at the time.

Lawrence Dority, 29, remained at the scene after the shooting and was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder, according to the sheriff’s office. He is currently being held at the Orange County Jail.

The sheriff’s office has no explanation for the shooting.

During the 2014 NCAA Tournament, Payne won the hearts of many by befriending Lacey Holsworth, a young cancer patient. Payne met the 8-year-old, who was battling neuroblastoma, several years ago during a team visit to a local hospital and struck up a friendship. Payne let her cut the net when the Michigan State Spartans won the Big Ten championship in 2014.

Payne had a successful career in Europe after five years in the NBA. The 6-foot-10 center has represented Greece, China, France, Turkey, and Lithuania. He won the Greek league with Panathinaikos in 2018 and the French league with ASVEL in 2019. ASVEL tweeted a photo of himself holding the championship trophy and described the news as “terribly shocking.”

Payne most recently played for Juventus Utena in Lithuania in February.

“So sad to hear that former Michigan State star Adreian Payne has passed away at the age of 31,” ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas tweeted. “AP was an outstanding player for Tom Izzo and became friends with Lacey Holsworth during her cancer battle.” Adreian Payne, rest in peace.”

Draymond Green, a former teammate of Payne’s at Michigan State, posted several broken heart emojis on Monday morning.
