TAMPA, Florida (AP) — According to a medical examiner’s report released Friday, former NFL player Mike Williams died from a rare form of sepsis related to dental health problems.

Williams, 36, died on September 12 after being admitted to the hospital following a construction accident while working as an electrician.

After being drafted out of Syracuse in 2010, the wide receiver spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His best season came as a rookie, when he had 11 touchdowns and 964 receiving yards. According to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s report, Williams died from bacterial sepsis caused by a dental infection and “retained tooth roots.” The report is in its early stages. Officials said Friday that a full autopsy will be released later, including toxicology and other information.

According to the initial report, cardiovascular disease was a contributing factor in his death, which was listed as natural.

According to the medical examiner’s office, this is the first time in Hillsborough County that a death has been attributed to this specific type of dental sepsis.

The Hillsborough County (Florida) Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause of death on Thursday, according to Jenna Laine of ESPN.com. It was determined that there was “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple dental caries and retained dental roots.”

According to Laine, the rare condition is associated with “poor dental health, decay, and infection.” Williams was 36 years old at the time.

Williams was injured in the head at work. He was taken to the hospital the next day with respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and sepsis caused by multiple brain abscesses. On September 12, he died in hospice care.

In 2010, the Buccaneers selected him in the fourth round. Williams signed with the Bills for the 2014 season after three seasons in Tampa. He did not play in 2015 before joining the Chiefs for the offseason, training camp, and preseason in 2016.
