The New York Giants’ offensive tackles Evan Neal and Tyre Phillips, who are both on season-ending injured reserve due to lower body ailments, underwent operations lately, the team announced to reporters.

Neal, the team’s seventh-round pick in 2022 and starting right tackle, has dealt with two ankle injuries this season, the second of which occurred against the Las Vegas Raiders.

He attempted to return this season, exercising before the team’s Week 15 game against the New Orleans Saints, but was listed as doubtful after a re-examination revealed a minor broken bone in his foot.

Neal’s surgery was performed on Tuesday by Dr. Robert Anderson, a specialist in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Phillips, who has started at right tackle in Neal’s absence, tore his quad tendon in last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Initially considered to be a knee ailment, an MRI revealed the tear, and Phillips’ season was over.

Phillips, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, underwent surgery on Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, which was conducted by Dr. Scott Rodeo.

Fourth-year player Matt Peart, who will also be an unrestricted free agent after this season, has since taken over for Phillips to finish the season. With Neal expected to spend the spring recuperating and the Giants likely to take a wait-and-see attitude to Phillips’ recovery, offensive tackle has suddenly become just as important a need for the Giants to address in the coming offseason.
