Report: Browns interview former star NFL RB for coaching position on Wednesday

The Cleveland Browns are moving rapidly to fill their suddenly vacant offensive positions. On the same day that various reports surfaced that head coach Kevin Stefanski was removing offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, running backs coach Stump Mitchell, and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney, it appears that Duce Staley is high on the team’s priority list.Browns' Kevin Stefanski shakes up offensive staff, 2 assistants gone; more moves possible, AP source says | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Staley is best remembered for his career as a running back in the NFL. Staley carried for more over 5,500 yards and 24 touchdowns over ten seasons, largely with the Philadelphia Eagles. He last appeared in the league in 2006.

Staley has since coached for the Eagles, the Detroit Lions, and the Carolina Panthers, where he served as running backs coach and assistant head coach last year. Now, Cleveland could be his next trip because he is the first interview in the door.

Staley has been praised for his coaching abilities, and he even took over as head coach in Philadelphia during training camp while Doug Pederson was out with COVID.Browns' Kevin Stefanski shakes up offensive staff, 2 assistants gone; more moves possible, AP source says | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It’s interesting that a potential running backs coach gets the first interview before an offensive coordinator. It is probable that Staley is interviewing for the OC position held by Van Pelt. Since being hired by the Browns, Stefanski has been in charge of calling the plays.

We will bring you up to date on all reported interviews as they become available. It will be interesting to see if the team advertises who they are interviewing for open positions, as other clubs have done.
