Last season, the Cincinnati Bengals experienced significant changes to their roster, seeing players like Jessie Bates, Vonn Bell, and Hayden Hurst depart. This led to new faces stepping into crucial roles during the season. With an offseason presenting numerous possibilities, the Bengals will rely on key players to step up and take on bigger responsibilities in 2024.
There’s a palpable sense of determination in Cincinnati to surpass their recent standards, having finished 9-8, with a 1-5 division record, and at the bottom of the AFC North. To achieve this, players must elevate their performances, and the team as a whole needs to excel. Here are five Bengals players who could play pivotal roles in achieving this goal in 2024.
Myles Murphy, drafted from Clemson in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, entered the league with high expectations. While his rookie season had its ups and downs, Murphy showed promising glimpses of his collegiate form towards the end of the season. In Week 18 against the Cleveland Browns, he displayed one of the highest pass-rush grades among defensive rookies all season. Though he faced criticism initially for a slow start in production, the Bengals’ front office tends to select players who align with the team’s culture, giving Murphy room to grow and prove himself.
The Bengals are in need of another consistent pass rusher to complement players like DJ Reader, Sam Hubbard, and B.J. Hill. While these players are solid, they don’t match the elite pass-rushing abilities of Trey Hendrickson. If Murphy can develop into a reliable piece in this aspect, it will bolster the Bengals’ defense, making it more formidable under Lou Anarumo’s scheme.
