Shocking news:Broncos recruiting a star under NRL investigation….
Ben Hunt’s hiring by the Brisbane Broncos is allegedly being scrutinized.
An allegation that a prominent Origin figure was hired by the Brisbane Broncos is being investigated by the NRL Integrity Unit.
The NRL is currently looking into the Brisbane Broncos, a day after the Dolphins were punished for player recruitment.
According to a News Corp story, the league’s Integrity Unit has opened an investigation into the Brisbane club’s interactions with Dragons captain Ben Hunt.
According to reports, the team has started investigating the Broncos’ purported pursuit of Hunt in June, when the playmaker for the Dragons said he was eager to get out of Sydney.
According to News Corp, the Dragons weren’t the team that filed the complaint.
There is no indication that the Broncos have committed any infraction, and the NRL apparently declined to comment on the Broncos-Hunt situation.
Back in June, Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy denied the club had been in contact with Hunt, despite comments from coach Kevin Walters that they would be interested if he was available.
“There haven’t been any negotiations with Ben and we’re not in for him because he’s not off contract,” Donaghy said at the time.
“I saw Kevvy’s quotes about Ben, which basically said nobody had spoken to him, but if a player like that was off-contract, the club would consider him.
All of this follows the Dolphins’ punishment after an NRL inquiry that lasted nine months.
The Dolphins were given a breach notice on Thursday for supposedly trying to convince Deine Mariner, a developing star for the Broncos, to terminate his two-year contract.
After an investigation, the Dolphins and Mariner’s agent, Dixon McIver, received the breach notification.
The breach notice is the outcome of a nine-month probe, while sources state that the Broncos complained to the NRL Integrity Unit late last year.
The Dolphins are the first NRL team in history to get this kind of infringement notice.
A $50,000 fine is suggested in the breach notice, with half of that amount suspended.
According to reports, Mariner’s representative verified that his client asked to be released from his Broncos contract, but the request was turned down.
Since then, his term has been extended till the end of 2027.
The Dolphins shockingly declared earlier in the season that they felt “used” by prospective players, claiming some took advantage of their talks to secure higher offers from their current teams.
NRL clubs’ anti-tampering policies prohibit them from pressuring players to violate their contracts.
The Dolphins were allegedly shown a “failure to comply with the record-keeping provisions of the (Playing Contract and Remuneration Rules)” according to the NRL’s breach notice.
