A £5 million deal has being completed by Rangers to sign their next Dujon Sterling.

Glasgow Rangers can yet pull off an unlikely triple crown at Ibrox with five games remaining in the season.

While Philippe Clement’s team held off St Mirren last Saturday, Cyriel Dessers’ late goal was sufficient to secure all three points.

The Light Blues have a match against Kilmarnock on Sunday. They’ll need to make a significant improvement from their performance against the Buddies last week if they want to go into their matchup with Celtic still having a chance to win the Premiership.

But given the way things have been going these past few weeks, it’s obvious that the present team needs a significant change if Clement hopes to be contending for accolades next season.

His summer spending plan is still up in the air because he could have to sell a few first-team players before he can add anyone, which would mean he would mostly have to rely on loan agreements and free transfers.

Ben Johnson, a defender for West Ham United, is apparently in talks with his agency, according to the Athletic, with the aim of luring him to Scotland when his present deal ends at the end of the current campaign.

The right-back has previously rejected a few contract offers, the most recent being a four-year deal that was rejected because the parties were unable to come to an agreement. The right-back also rejected an upgraded six-and-a-half-year extension in February 2022.

Leeds United and Crystal Palace are also eager to make a move for the Englishman in an effort to bolster their squads, so the Gers are not the only team interested in him.

Johnson will not cost Clement a dime, so the Belgian coach can prioritize spending money on other parts of the team. His wealth of Premier League experience may also be advantageous to Clement.

A few free agents from England who the Light Blues signed last summer proved to be great acquisitions. Due to his incredible play, Jack Butland has earned a nomination for PFA Scotland Premiership Player of the Year.

The most unexpected development of the season has probably been the rise of Dujon Sterling as a vital member of the first team roster. Given his versatility in terms of positions, Johnson, should the Rangers sign him, could easily become Clement’s replacement for Sterling.

The stats for Dujon Sterling’s season

When Sterling first joined the team last summer, he was seen as a versatile player who could fill in at several positions and be a valuable squad option.

In fact, when Beale was sent out after a 3-1 loss to Aberdeen in September, the former Chelsea starlet had only played in seven games, starting twice.

But under Clement, Sterling has demonstrated his adaptability all over the field, filling in to play positions in which he might not feel totally at ease while still completing the task at hand.

The 24-year-old has appeared in six different positions so far in the 2023–24 campaign, including left back and right wing.

Sterling is a reliable choice for Clement to use, as seen by the fact that he has started just nine league games, won 51% of his ground duels, averaged 0.7 crucial passes per game, and only loses possession 8.1 times per match.

Despite playing the entire game as a center midfielder—a position he had played only a few times before—the defender was named man of the match in the League Cup final victory over Aberdeen.

The Rangers might have Sterling 2.0 if they sign Johnson.

What the Rangers could gain from Ben Johnson

For Johnson, the current season has not been good. Despite playing 25 times for the team in all competitions, he has only started seven of those games, failing to unseat Vladimir Coufal at right back.

Actually, he hasn’t got the opportunity to fully display his abilities, which were highlighted in earlier campaigns.

The defender debuted in the 2018–19 season. After two seasons, he established himself as a mainstay in the first squad, appearing in 51 Premier League games in three years.

West Ham's Ben Johnson

Johnson was incredibly dependable even though he only played in 17 Premier League games the previous season. He finished in the top ten for accurate passes (19.6), successful dribbles (0.5), tackles (1.2), and clearances (1.4) among the entire West Ham team.

A huge plus for Clement may be the 24-year-old’s versatility, as he can play center defense, left back, and even in the middle of the midfield when needed.

The £20k-per-week player even ranks in the top 13% for aerials won per 90 (1.52) and in the top 11% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.41) when compared to his positional peers in the top five leagues in Europe. This indicates that Johnson is not only a formidable aerial threat but also an impressive bomber down the flanks to support the attack.

Trevor Sinclair, a former West Ham player, has already given Johnson high praise, calling him “superb” in 2021 when he was starting to establish himself in the starting lineup.

There is no questioning his ability, even though this season may not have been the most productive—which is why he is departing this summer.
