SAD: With deep sadness,Ipswich Town must reflect on its £2 million deal: View
|Suffolk Town’s 2018–19 season was terrible as a result of their promotion to League One following 17 years in the Championship.
One of the major transactions that failed to materialize during the Tractor Boys’ turbulent summer of the previous year was the £2 million double signing of Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala.
Paul Hurst, the manager, signed both players, but they failed to live up to their potential at Shrewsbury Town and they left the team in 2022 after a disappointing four years.
Nsiala and Nolan were Shrewsbury Town’s stars.
Bringing some of his side from Shropshire, he was eager to see Hurst continue his career at Portman Road. Hurst duly won the aforementioned £2 million double agreement after Nsiala and Nolan were seen as two distinct options that indicated potential for the future.
This trade seemed like it would benefit both parties based on the last campaign. However, during their four years at Portman Road, neither player ever displayed the amount Ipswich paid.
Both made significant early-season appearances for Ipswich, and Hurst continued to have faith in both based on their past performances. Hurst was fired from the team after just 15 games, and Paul Lambert, the new manager, did not think highly of either player when he had to start playing impact roles off the bench.
Their first season with the club ended in disgrace with their relegation to League One, and things didn’t get any better the following seasons either.

The Tractor Boys need to have a successful summer transfer window.
Two things plagued Nolan’s 2019–20 season: injuries and inconsistent playing time. However, after the midfielder and Paul Lambert fell out, the 2020–21 season marked the beginning of the end for him as he made just 13 appearances and was sidelined starting in January.
The Liverpudlian’s situation would worsen when he was forced to practice with the under-23 team and sustained a terrible knee injury in March 2021. That would be the last straw for the Ipswich board, and they ended his contract with just six months remaining.
Nsiala’s situation wasn’t any better. His lack of skill with the ball was heavily criticized by the Portman Road supporters, which was a major factor in the reason they weren’t aiming as high.
After spending the 2019–20 season on loan at the financially struggling Bolton Wanderers, he spent the next 1.5 years trying to establish his value in East Anglia. The Everton youth product, regrettably, was never able to establish himself as a regular member of the squad and will now be primarily remembered by supporters for his altercation with them during his farewell game against Charlton.
Considering how unimpressive both players ended up being, it’s difficult to avoid the assumption that the Tractor Boys deeply regretted approving a £2 million contract for them.
Ipswich Town has to repent making two deals.
Despite arriving on the same day, both players would depart three weeks apart when Kieran McKenna made changes to the team.
He hasn’t played any better for Nolan since leaving Ipswich. His injuries have hindered him again throughout his spells with Tranmere and Bristol Rovers, where he has only made 13 appearances in the last 18 months. His career hasn’t recovered either, dropping to the Northern Premier League; he left Macclesfield at the end of the 2023–2024 season.
Nsiala, a central defender, has had more successful stints with Fleetwood and Burton, where he was given the opportunity to play League One football. scoring an important goal to help the Brewers avoid relegation in their victory over Leyton Orient.
In retrospect, the performance of the Salop pair during the 2017–18 season let Ipswich Town supporters down.
Similar to numerous other signings during that window, the Tractor Boys board made a poor choice by selecting Nolan and Nsiala.
