Ipswich Town is reportedly considering recruiting former loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer, but they will have fierce competition for his services, according to football journalist Graeme Bailey.
According to Bailey, the 6′ 1″ center back, who is currently a vital member of Celtic’s roster under Brendan Rodgers, is also being watched by West Ham United and Fulham this transfer window. The Scottish team is adamant that they will try to hold onto their star 26-year-old despite all of this interest heating up.
This could indicate that Ipswich is now pursuing Carter-Vickers’ signing in an attempt to close a deal for Joe Rodon, who has also been strongly linked to them during this transfer window, as McKenna looks to fortify his team’s vulnerable defense in front of their journey to the Premier League.
Those at Portman Road will undoubtedly be concerned about how many goals they can score after their season opener against Manchester City and Liverpool. Carter-Vickers’ signing is expected to support the Tractor Boys at the back and help them stay afloat in the top division.
How Joe Rodon and Carter-Vickers are similar
Although Rodon is now in high demand, understandably so following an impressive season on loan in the Championship with Leeds, Carter-Vickers would also bring a lot of hype to Suffolk upon his arrival.
The towering defender, who joined the Bhoys at the beginning of the 2021/22 season and has since won seven trophies for the team, including two selections to the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season, may now see this as the ideal chance to advance and establish himself in the top English division.
Despite enduring an injury-plagued season for his Glasgow-based employers, Carter-Vickers battles gallantly against Rodon in their head-to-head matchups over the last season, even outperforming the current Tottenham Hotspur player in several areas.
The USA international, who was once considered a possible future gem for Spurs, will also feel that he has unfinished business in the Premier League because he has never played for the North London team in the top league.
Carter-Vickers was once expected to excel at Spurs; in fact, former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino once said that a younger Carter-Vickers could be “one of the best center-backs in England in the future.” However, after being shipped to Celtic for approximately £6 million in 2022, Carter-Vickers will feel that this is finally his chance to shine in England.
McKenna would be ecstatic if this maneuver succeeded, as he could enter the game to provide more numbers and compete against players like Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess in the middle of defense.
