Connor Barron of Aberdeen is supposedly close to joining Rangers, despite interest from teams all around Europe.

The Light Blues have stepped up their efforts to sign Barron on a free transfer, according to a Daily Record story from last week. The 21-year-old’s departure from Pittodrie at the conclusion of his contract was subsequently confirmed by the Dons.

Bologna, Hellas Verona, Plymouth, Stoke, Cardiff, and Swansea were all chasing a deal when Rangers made an improved bid. Barron now appears to be joining this summer’s opponents in the Scottish Premiership, Aberdeen.

The Ibrox team is “poised” to finalize the signing after “winning the race” for the free agent this summer, according to The Rangers Review. The midfielder is reportedly “eager” to be a part of Philippe Clement’s team revamp.

With Clement expected to make his fourth summer signing, Rangers are rumored to have “seen off” competition from England and Italy, according to the Daily Record.

It is anticipated that a deal will be completed before the Rangers resume preseason practice on Monday. Barron would have owed the Dons around £525,000 in training compensation had he moved outside of Scotland.

However, the Scottish clubs will need to reach a compensation agreement or risk having a tribunal step in to set a fee if they decide to play for the Light Blues.

Barron isn’t anticipated to be Ibrox’s final new hire. After Euro 2024, Liam Kelly is expected to join, while negotiations over Bayern Munich forward Yusuf Kadabayi are still ongoing.
