Breaking News: National League and EFL clubs are interested in a young player from Sunderland.

James Copley reports that a number of National League and Football League teams are interested in Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young.

Sunderland is getting ready for another season in the Championship.

The Black Cats’ third season back in the second division will begin in 2024–2025. They finished in the top six their first season, but had a terrible campaign the previous year.

Tony Mowbray, Michael Beale and Mike Dodds all played a part in Sunderland finishing 16th and it seems the hangover is continuing.

But 17-year-old Young was not involved. He was on loan at Darlington in the National League North for a portion of the previous campaign. His outstanding play kept the team from being demoted.

During his loan, the adolescent goalkeeper made 14 appearances, giving up just 13 goals and recording five clean sheets.

With his stock high, Young is expected to return to Sunderland this summer. According to Copley, nearly every National League club is keeping an eye on him, including a handful in League One and League Two.

A subject of discussion

Right now, the Sunderland goalkeeper position is one that is being highlighted.

Number one Anthony Patterson has been linked to Manchester City, and Alex Bass just made a permanent move to Notts County.

It does not appear likely, though, that Patterson will join City this summer. Young is more likely to go out on loan once more.

It’s imperative that the 17-year-old plays as many senior football games as he can.

Before receiving his chance to play for Sunderland’s first team, Patterson took a similar route, and it appears the team is developing another talented goalie.

Much work remains.

It will be a while before Sunderland is ready for next season. Although the transfer window has recently opened, not much is happening in terms of hiring.

Additionally, they have not yet named a new head coach.

It has been somewhat embarrassing to look for a new employer. The fans are growing impatient, and because preseason is drawing near, scheduling an appointment is essential.

Sunderland has to do better than they did the previous season, but they now seem very far away.

It will be fascinating to observe how their summer plays out and, in the end, who takes over as the team’s captain for the upcoming season.
