Vital: Coventry City and Marko Stamenic reach a £4 million agreement – sources

Football Insider has been informed by sources that Coventry City and New Zealand international midfielder Marko Stamenic have reached an agreement.

Coventry has been keeping an eye on the 22-year-old for some time, and they and Red Star Belgrade have worked out a deal worth about £4 million for the holding midfield player.

Although the midfielder has been linked to Nottingham Forest recently, their East Midlands rivals have emerged victorious in the fight to get him.

Coventry has prioritized adding midfield players this summer, so Stamenic’s arrival will be a huge help to Mark Robins’ team.

The Wellington native made numerous appearances for Red Star during the 2023–24 campaign as they won the Serbian championship.

In 35 games across all competitions, he recorded one assist and two goals.

In 28 of those games, including a 3-1 Champions League away loss to Man City, Stamenic started.

The 22-year-old, whose deal in the Serbian capital expires in June 2027, is mostly used as a center midfielder, though he has also made appearances in holding positions.

He began his professional career in his home country of New Zealand before moving to FC Copenhagen in 2020.

Despite having barely spent a year in Serbia, Stamenic is already planning to go to England, having signed with Red Star on a free transfer last summer (2023).

He has played for his native New Zealand for fifteen occasions, scoring one goal each time.
