BREAK Sunderland Enter Intense Battle With Derby County For 24-Year-Old Former Hartlepool United Man

Sunderland

Championship side Sunderland is among many NFL teams vying for Gateshead defender Kenton Richardson in the summer, following his standout campaign with the non-league team.

In their pursuit of the soon-to-be free agent, Barnsley, Derby County, Oxford United, Notts County, and Peterborough United join the Black Cats.

The 25-year-old moved to Sunderland as a young player in 2020 after starting his career with Hartlepool United. After that, he had successful loan stints at Spennymoor Town and Notts County before moving on a free transfer to Gateshead in 2022.

He only made three appearances for his parent club in the 2021 EFL Trophy group stage, but if the team gets its wish, he might make another appearance. Notts County, a different former League Two club, has also boldly entered the race. The right-back was signed by Notts on a short-term loan, however he only played in one National League game against Halifax Town.

Richardson, nevertheless, leaves Gateshead after making 68 appearances and scoring three goals. After defeating Solihull Moors in the championship game, he was a member of the team that raised the FA Trophy at Wembley. There will be some disappointment, too, as his team’s stadium issues prevented them from competing in the play-offs, even though they finished in first place at the end of the season. This was owing to a severe regulation by the EFL.

Next stop?

Maybe Richardson needs to consider what he wants most. Numerous offers ranging from a full range of game time to money are being made throughout the football league. Returning to his home club does not ensure he will immediately make the first team; he might need to spend more time on loan. However, with Championship offers on the table, he might believe he is worth more than a League Two position.

Peterborough United, a team renowned for nurturing non-league talent, is the one that would fit him the most. They have a League One position that combines the best aspects of both environments and accommodates athletes who want to advance.
