Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is not like other owners. As the Cowboys’ owner and general manager.
Jones continues to play a significant role in the team’s daily operations, in contrast to many others who take a hands-off approach and assign tasks to subordinates.
Given his involvement, Jones was naturally asked why the Cowboys appear to be taking their time re-signing some of their important players. Two such players are wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is waiting for a contract extension as Dallas training camp kicks off, and quarterback Dak Prescott, who is about to enter the final year of his deal. In a lengthy, strange response, Jones compared himself to Patrick Mahomes, the great quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and an option quarterback.
“A significant portion of witnessing the leaves fall, the passage of time, and the passing of this day and this week is that we are so engrossed in attempting to see where we are with our circumstances,” Jones said. “Fault, by the way: I have played option quarterback a lot in my life and waited till the very last leaf on the tree. And if you want to visualize a pure option quarterback running to the sideline, consider this: before I made the decision, I ran the ball and held onto it instead of passing it to the back, pitching it back, or throwing it. I did this until I reached the sideline because I was unable to obtain the necessary information and felt that it was not right for me to make that choice.
As a result, what our followers and you are witnessing is that we are buying time. We have not pitched or handed the ball off; instead, we are option quarterbacking and moving toward the sidelines as we try to decide what to do. Do you think that sounds like Mahomes? Just a tiny bit? Alright. It does. It does, in fact. Having stated that, all I am doing is trying to describe this to you; we are just waiting for something to happen in the morning.

Jerry said he’s like an option quarterback reading the market.
