Leeds United’s summer transfer activity is far from over as manager Daniel Farke and his team anxiously await the deadline next month, especially with the possibility of key players leaving.
The club is still looking to strengthen various positions, with central midfield being a priority, as recently confirmed by the Leeds boss. Farke may once again look to the German leagues for talent to bolster the squad.
Leeds Target Bundesliga Midfielder
According to German outlet BILD, Leeds is eager to sign FC Koln’s Dejan Ljubičić. This follows the successful acquisition of Ilia Gruev from the Bundesliga. However, Leeds has already encountered a setback in their pursuit of the 27-year-old, with a £3.3 million bid reportedly rejected. Ljubičić is valued closer to £4 million, according to Football Transfers.

Despite this, Leeds remains determined, especially with the new Championship season approaching. With other potential midfield signings like Oliver Skipp falling through, Leeds may soon increase their offer for the Austrian star. If successful, Ljubičić could fill the role left by Kalvin Phillips.
Ljubičić as a Potential Phillips Replacement
Since Phillips’ departure to Manchester City in 2022, Leeds has missed the aggressive and tenacious presence he provided. Speculation about Phillips returning to Elland Road ended when Leeds failed to secure promotion. Now, Ljubičić is seen as the desired central midfield signing.

Despite Koln’s relegation last season, Ljubičić showed his quality, recording five goals and one assist during the 2022/23 campaign. He consistently battled on the field, winning an average of three duels per game.
Phillips played similarly during his final season at Leeds, winning 4.9 duels per game and contributing 14 goals and 13 assists over 234 games. If Ljubičić can replicate this form, he could become a key player for Leeds in their quest for success.
