Marcus Rashford, who is now on loan at Aston Villa, is apparently still hoping to return to Barcelona in the summer.
After a falling out with Ruben Amorim, who made his departure from Manchester United a top priority in January, the winger was placed on the firing line at Old Trafford.
Several teams, including Barcelona, showed a strong interest in the Englishman, but the Blaugrana were unable to press for a deal, which allowed Villa to jump in and sign him on the day of the deadline.
The Sun claims that Rashford is still eager to transfer to Catalonia and is optimistic that a deal can be renegotiated in the summer.
Now that a transfer price has been set and Villa has agreed to a £40 million option to purchase him out of his loan, Rashford seems certain that Barcelona will make a move for him if he can regain his goal-scoring ability at Villa Park.
As they aim for Europe this season, Villa should view his desire to win Barcelona over as good news because they now have an additional incentive to score goals.
Given the choice between Villa Park and the Nou Camp, it now seems likely that Rashford would favor a move to Spain over staying with his current team.
Barcelona sporting director Deco confirmed the club had an interest in the 27-year-old but clarified that there was never a strong push to sign him in January—rather, he was simply considered an option.
“It’s true there were discussions about Rashford,” Deco admitted. “But we weren’t urgently searching for a player at the time.”
Since making his first two appearances for Villa, Rashford has yet to find the back of the net. However, he came close in their 1-1 draw with Ipswich, hitting the crossbar with a free-kick before Ollie Watkins capitalized on the rebound.
The former Manchester United academy graduate has shown flashes of his past form at Villa Park but has hinted that his time under Unai Emery is only temporary.
“Obviously, my stay here is short-term, but I want to make the most of it,” he said in his introductory interview. “The best way to do that is by using my abilities to help the team.”
