The West Indies Championship XI leads South Africa by 225 runs at stumps on the second day of the four-day warm-up match at Tarouba thanks to a century from Springer

At the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on Thursday, the West Indies Championship XI and South Africa were playing a four-day warm-up match. The standout of the second day of the competition was Barbadian all-rounder Shamar Springer.

The 26-year-old former star of the West Indies Under-19 team scored his first-class century at 131 to lead the West Indians to an overwhelming 397 all out in their opening innings.

With Joshua Bishop and Springer at the crease on overs of 45 and 6, respectively, the Championship XI began day two 245-6 off 82 overs.

The two batted brilliantly together, adding 107 runs for the seventh wicket before Bishop was sent out by Dane Piedt after 78 balls.

Bryan Charles (0) and Kemar Roach (6) fell off the bowling of Piedt in the 118th over, just before Springer was the final man out.

With 212 balls consumed, Springer hit 16 fours and three sixes over his innings.

Piedt took 3-41 from 16.3 overs to end, while Kagiso Rabada, the pacer, got 3-47 from his nine overs.

South Africa had scored 172-2 after 52 overs at stumps, 225 runs behind the Championship XI.

 

At the end of the day’s play, captain Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham were the only batsmen still standing at the crease with scores of 35* and 82*, respectively, while opener Aiden Markram made 82 before giving up due to injury.

 

West Indies Championship XI 397 all out after 117.3 overs (Kagiso Rabada 3-47, Keshav Maharaj 2-82, Jeremy Solozano 111, Joshua Bishop 50, Dane Piedt 3-41).
