Beanie Bishop, a former cornerback for the Mountaineers, had a quick ascent from being a supporting player at Minnesota who received little notice to becoming an All-American at West Virginia. He is now converting an undrafted free agency opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers into a possible starting job, suggesting that he isn’t nearly finished with that quest.
Bishop appeared to be sticking at slot cornerback for the time being, as was previously reported earlier this week. On Day 1 of the Steelers’ Training Camp, Bishop was receiving first-team drills at the position. On Day 2, Bishop was practicing with the starting squad once more, containing receivers like Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson, and only losing one game in the two sessions.
Bishop has also made an impression on his new teammates, including veteran safety DeShon Elliott, who told the media what he thought of the man.
Elliott remarked, “Little Beanie man, he’s doing good. Rook is trying his hardest, learning new things every day, and asking questions every day.” I love that boy, but he keeps pestering me every day in my dorm room. If he continues to be tenacious, continues to want to learn and develop, pays attention to the coaches, and follows the older guys’ leadership, I think he will be a fantastic player. I believe he’ll be alright.”

Bishop has stated to the media that his goal is to compete for a spot on the depth chart this fall and that he is attempting to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves during the offseason and preseason. These first reps and impressions could be critical to granting Bishop a chance to demonstrate his abilities on the field this season, since Steelers slot CB Cam Sutton is scheduled to serve an eight-game ban this season.
